The Exchequer Hall

Window and Romanesque modillions on the west eaves wall of the Exchequer Hall  Built at the same time as the keep, in the first quarter of the 12 th century, by Henry I Beauclerc, the "Echiquier" hall as it is called was used by the dukes of Normandy to entertain their important guests. It probably had a noble upper floor when it was built, but this disappeared in the 14 th century to meet the latest princely tastes. Detail of the archivolt on the front door of the Exchequer HallThe Exchequer Hall was badly damaged during the bombing raids of 1944, but was restored in exemplary fashion and now houses the Musée de Normandie's temporary exhibitions.
