From 1338, quite a few texts mention of the bailiff's residence, then, later on, that of the captain of the castle, and lastly that of the "governor of the towns and castle of Caen ". The bailiff also had his personal residence there, and his offices, private chapel and a courtroom where "wrong-doers are judged". In the 17 th c., major modifications kept only the plan and dimensions of the earlier building. It became the Musée de Normandie in 1946, and to it a west wing was added and opened to the public in 1983.
