The "Old Palace" and the Exchequer Hall

Extra care is to be taken with the "Vieux Palais" (Old Palace), the Echiquier (Exchequer) and the north front of the rampart, with the work focussing on this area. The remains of the "Old Palace" and the Exchequer Hall are crucial witnesses to the historyThe Exchequer Hallof the Anglo-Norman world, which extended from Scotland to the Mediterranean. Hard to make out and in a poor state of preservation, they are currently in danger of disappearing altogether. In this area, the most crucial problems are strictly those of preserving the archaeological remains, and so the priority is to combine preservation work alongside development projects.

The Exchequer Hall might be used to present Anglo-Norman history in a permanent exhibition. The laying of part of a floor, a contemporary wooden furnishing that would be obviously that – and removable – will make up for the lack of exhibition space while enhancing the hall and opening it up to visitors. Direct public access will be provided from inside the building onto the restored parapet walk along the north rampart.
