Accesses

The Porte Saint-Pierre gate (15-19th c.), from the church spire.  Until the 13 th century, the main castle access was from the north, where a powerful tower-gate defended the fort entrance. The presentday Porte Saint-Pierre, to the south, was just a narrow secondary gate, used only to come and go to and from the ducal town spread out at the foot of the castle. The Porte des Champs is an early 13 th century creation. It took over the role of the original tower-gate, which was destroyed when the keep chemise was developed.
