The fortifications

The rampart over the Rue de Geôle, viewed from the steeple of St Pierre's church  While their original layout has on the whole been kept, the structure of the fortifications has changed over time. First erected in wood, the ramparts were soon replaced with a stone construction, there being so much stone all over the site. Then, during the 12th century, the square towers supplanted the original alures. These walls are edged with deep moats rarely visited even by the local people, although they make a very pleasant walk with a harmonious blend of vegetable and mineral. The ground angle views of the ramparts restore to its former glory the powerful fortress that Caen Castle once was.
