William the Conqueror's Palace

The remains of William the Conqueror's palace were uncovered during excavation work in the sixties. Among the remains are various bases belonging to at least two distinct 11 th century buildings: a chapel dedicated to St George, where Duke William could pray in private, and a large paved hall where he entertained his guests. This hall is the ancestor of the nearby Exchequer Hall . The other structures that can be seen belong to more recent buildings added on to the ducal palace from the 13 th to the 15 th centuries.
