Senghor's Cannon

One of the two cannons given to the city of Caen by the Senegalese president Léopold Sédar Senghor.   Two impressive cannons are to be seen in the Caen Castle enclosure, however they are unrelated to the history of the site. These two artillery guns come from Gorea Island , formerly the hub of the slave trade off Senegal . They were a gift made to the city of Caen in 1967 by the Senegalese president, Léopold Sédar Senghor, in the name of the friendly ties between the city of Caen and Senegal . At the time, they were placed in the north-In the presence of the mayor of Caen Brigitte le Brethon, President Abdou Diouf unveils the commemorative plaque placed near the cannon.west corner of castle where they were off the beaten track for visitors and a hindrance to understanding the nearby 16 th century artillery terrace. They have now been brought to a spot where they can be seen better on the lawns opposite the Musée de Normandie. The cannon were unveiled in the presence of Brigitte le Brethon, mayor of Caen and deputy of the Calvados and by the former president of Senegal Abdou Diouf.
